Games console households

The games console tracker follows the number of homes with a games console connected to a TV set. The Establishment Survey tracks each generation of the three main console brands: Sony PlayStation, Microsoft Xbox and Nintendo.

UK households with access to a games console increased to nearly 8.7 million in Q3 2020 – an annual increase of almost 900k, or 11%. This was the highest figure since 8.8m homes had access to a games console in Q2 2014.

Year-on-year change for the three tracked brands saw market leader Sony PlayStation add 272k homes compared to Q3 2019, increasing 7% to reach 4.4 million homes. Access to an Xbox was also up year-on-year, adding 7% versus Q3 2019 to reach 3.9 million homes. A Nintendo console could be found in almost 1.5m homes, but while this was an annual increase of almost 10% that figure represented a -13% decline compared to Q1 2020.

Note: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the suspension of face-to-face interviewing, BARB Establishment Survey data were not produced for Q2 2020. Q3 2020 data are based on fieldwork conducted when interviewing resumed in August and September.
